- GEO is built on top of SEO, not instead of it " strong traditional SEO remains the foundation.
Search is changing faster than at any point since Google launched. ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Gemini increasingly answer questions directly, often without sending a click to any website. Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) is the practice of getting your business found, understood and cited by these AI systems. Most businesses are not thinking about it yet, which is exactly why it is an opportunity.
What is GEO and how does it differ from traditional SEO?
SEO gets you ranked in Google's traditional blue-link results. GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) gets your content cited by AI systems when they answer questions " it targets a different output from the same information ecosystem.
SEO optimises to rank in a list of links. GEO optimises to be the source an AI quotes when it answers a question. They share foundations, quality content, technical health, authority, but GEO adds an emphasis on clear, factual, well-structured information that an AI can extract and attribute. The goal shifts from "rank number one" to "be the answer".
When an AI answers a question directly, the traditional number-one ranking may never get seen. Being the business the AI cites, or recommends, is becoming as valuable as ranking first, and far fewer competitors are optimising for it.
How do AI systems decide which sources to cite?
AI systems weight content that is clear, authoritative, consistent across multiple sources and structured to answer questions directly. Original data, expert credentials and mentions in credible publications all increase the likelihood of citation.
AI assistants draw on their training, live web results and structured data. They favour sources that are clear, factual, well-structured, consistent across the web, and trusted by other sources. In other words, much of what makes good SEO also makes good GEO, but clarity and credibility matter even more.
How do you optimise content to appear in AI search answers?
Write clear, direct answers to specific questions " not just general topic overviews. Use structured headings that match search queries, include original insights or data, and ensure your content is cited or referenced by other sources.
- Answer real questions directly and concisely, AI extracts clear answers, not waffle.
- Use clear structure: descriptive headings, short paragraphs, and question-and-answer formats.
- Add FAQ and structured data (schema) so machines can read and attribute your content.
- Keep your business information consistent everywhere, AI cross-checks across the web.
- Build genuine authority and mentions on trusted sources, AI weighs credibility heavily.
- Keep content accurate and current, AI favours up-to-date, factual information.
Why does your Google Business Profile matter for AI search?
AI systems pull local business information from Google Business Profile, citations and reviews. A complete, consistent and well-reviewed GBP increases the chance of being surfaced in local AI search answers.
For local businesses, AI assistants lean heavily on structured local data, your Google Business Profile, consistent NAP, and citations across trusted directories. A complete, accurate, well-reviewed GBP is one of the strongest things you can do for AI visibility as well as traditional local SEO.
Do you need an llms.txt file or AI information page?
An llms.txt file and a dedicated AI information page signal to crawlers that you are AI-friendly and provide structured information about your business. They are not essential but are low-effort, high-signal additions.
An emerging practice is publishing an llms.txt file and a plain AI-information page that clearly states who you are, what you do, where, and your key facts, helping AI crawlers understand your business accurately and reducing the risk of being misrepresented. It is low effort and forward-looking, and likely to matter more as adoption grows.
Does GEO replace SEO?
Not yet. AI systems are trained partly on search-ranked content, so traditional SEO signals still influence GEO outcomes. The businesses best positioned in AI search right now are those with the strongest existing SEO foundations.
Traditional search still drives the majority of traffic, so SEO remains essential. GEO is an addition, a way to stay visible as search behaviour shifts. The businesses that win the next few years will do both: strong SEO foundations, with content and data structured so AI systems find and cite them too.
