Local SEO from a freelance SEO consultant
Most local businesses are invisible online, and their competitors are taking the enquiries. Local SEO fixes that. I provide local SEO services to businesses across the UK, helping you rank for the searches your customers actually make in their area, with honest, measurable results. It is freelance local SEO, so you deal directly with the person doing the work, not an account manager.
Freelance local SEO, not an agency
Whether you call it a local SEO agency, a local SEO freelancer or a local SEO consultant, what you actually want is someone who can get your business found in your area and is honest about what it takes. That is what I do: local SEO services for businesses anywhere in the UK, delivered directly by me, with no agency overhead and no account managers in the middle.
What local SEO is, and how it actually works
Local SEO is the work of making your business visible to people searching for what you do in your area. It is different from national SEO in one important way: Google shows two separate sets of results for local searches, and you can earn a place in both.
The first is the map pack, sometimes called the local 3-pack. It is the block of three business listings shown above a map, and for local searches it usually sits right at the top of the page. These listings are pulled from Google Business Profiles, not from your website directly, which is why your profile matters so much.
The second is the regular organic results, the familiar list of blue links below the map. These are ranked from your website, the same as any other search.
Ranking in the map pack and ranking organically are related but not identical. Google weighs three things for local results: relevance (how well your business matches the search), distance (how close you are to the searcher) and prominence (how well known and trusted your business is, based on reviews, citations, links and your wider web presence). You cannot change your distance, but relevance and prominence are exactly what good local SEO builds.
My job is to work both sides at once: optimise your Google Business Profile and local signals so you appear in the map pack, and strengthen your website so it ranks organically for the same searches. Done together, you take up more of the page and leave less room for competitors.
What my local SEO service includes
Local SEO is not one thing, it is several pieces working together. Here is what I handle for you, and why each part matters.
Google Business Profile management
Your Google Business Profile is the single most important asset for local visibility, because it is what feeds the map pack and Google Maps. I claim and verify it, choose the right primary and secondary categories, write a clear description, list your services and products, set accurate hours, add photos, and keep it active with posts and Q&A. A complete, well-managed profile is often the difference between appearing in the 3-pack and being invisible on the map.
NAP and local citations
NAP stands for Name, Address and Phone number. It sounds trivial, but consistency matters: if your details appear differently across the web, an old address here, a different phone number there, it undermines Google's confidence in your business and can hold back your rankings. I audit your NAP everywhere it appears, fix the inconsistencies, and build citations on the directories that count, the major UK players like Yell, Bing Places, Apple Maps and Thomson Local, plus the directories specific to your industry and area. Beyond rankings, these listings are places your customers genuinely find you.
Reviews and reputation
Reviews are one of the strongest signals for the map pack, and the first thing most customers look at before they call. I put a simple, repeatable system in place to earn more genuine reviews, help you respond to them properly, good and bad, and make sure review activity is working in your favour rather than being left to chance. I never buy reviews or game the system, that is against Google's rules and risks your profile.
Local keyword research
I find the exact searches your customers use, not the generic terms, but the specific, location-led phrases that signal someone is ready to buy. A Bradford plumber needs to rank for different things than a Leeds accountant, and 'near me' searches behave differently again. I map the full opportunity across your services and area, and prioritise by commercial value and how achievable each one is.
On-page and local landing pages
Your website needs to tell Google clearly where you operate and what you offer. I optimise your key pages with location signals, structured titles and descriptions, proper headings and genuinely useful content. Where it makes sense, I build dedicated location pages for the areas you serve, so you can rank in more than one town without thin, duplicate pages that Google ignores.
Local link building and digital PR
Links from relevant, trusted sources still tell Google your business is credible. For local businesses that means local citations, industry directories, supplier and partner links, sponsorships, and genuine local press and PR. I build these the right way, through real outreach, never bought links or spam that could get your site penalised.
Local schema markup
Schema is structured data that spells out your business facts in a format search engines and AI systems can read directly. I add LocalBusiness, Service, Review and FAQ schema so Google understands your name, address, opening hours, services and ratings without guessing, which helps both your rich results in search and your chances of being pulled into AI answers.
Technical foundations
None of the above works on a slow or broken website. I make sure the technical basics are right: fast Core Web Vitals, proper mobile performance, a clean crawlable structure, secure HTTPS and tidy internal linking. These are the baseline Google expects before it will rank you, local or otherwise.
Every day you are not on page one, a competitor is taking your customers.
When someone searches for a plumber, a solicitor, a florist or a web designer in their area, they click one of the top three results. Maybe four. If your business is not there, you are invisible to that customer. They ring someone else. They book someone else. They spend money with someone else.
That happens every single day. For most local businesses, the gap between where they rank and where they should rank represents thousands of pounds in lost revenue annually. Not because the product or service is worse than the competition. Simply because Google does not know them well enough to show them first.
Local SEO is the process of fixing that. Not overnight, not through tricks, but through systematic, sustained work that builds your relevance, authority and visibility in Google's eyes until you are the business it shows first for the searches your customers make.
I have delivered this at enterprise scale, growing a major national website from near-zero to 50,000 monthly organic visitors, ranking across 4,000 commercial keywords and generating over £2 million in website-led pipeline. The same discipline, applied to your local business.
Are you experiencing any of these?
- ✕Competitors consistently appearing above you in Google search results
- ✕A Google Business Profile that is unclaimed or poorly set up
- ✕Traffic to your website but few enquiries from it
- ✕Relying entirely on word of mouth or paid ads to generate business
- ✕A website that has never ranked for anything meaningful
- ✕Paying an agency monthly but unclear what they actually do

I would rather you understand exactly what you are investing in than oversell and underdeliver. Here is the honest picture.
What SEO can do
- ✓Help the right local customers find you on Google before they find a competitor
- ✓Move your business into Google's local pack (the map results) for searches in your area
- ✓Increase organic traffic that keeps coming without paying per click
- ✓Build long-term authority so rankings compound and become harder to dislodge
- ✓Fix technical problems that are actively preventing Google from ranking your site
- ✓Create content that answers the questions your customers search for, driving qualified leads
- ✓Improve your click-through rate from search results by optimising titles and descriptions
- ✓Give you clear, honest reporting so you can see exactly what is improving and why
What SEO cannot do
- ✕Guarantee a specific ranking position on a specific date (nobody can, and anyone who says otherwise is misleading you)
- ✕Produce overnight results - meaningful SEO growth takes 3 to 6 months minimum
- ✕Override Google's algorithm - I work within it, not against it
- ✕Compensate for a poor product or service - SEO brings people to your door, it cannot make them buy
- ✕Work without your involvement - good SEO needs your knowledge of your customers and your business
- ✕Produce results without a website that can actually convert visitors once they arrive
How I deliver local SEO results.
Eight steps, consistently applied. No shortcuts, no black-hat tactics, no vague promises. Just systematic work that moves rankings in the right direction.
Discovery and audit
Before anything else, I need to understand where you stand. I audit your current website, your existing rankings, your Google Business Profile, your competitors and the search landscape for your specific area and sector. Most businesses are surprised by how much is either broken or simply untapped.
- Technical crawl of your site to find errors, broken links and crawlability issues
- Ranking audit across your target keywords
- Competitor analysis - what are they doing that you are not?
- Google Business Profile assessment
- Backlink profile review
Keyword and opportunity research
I identify the exact searches your ideal customers make, not generic terms, but the specific phrases that signal buying intent in your area. A Bradford plumber ranks for different terms than a Leeds accountant. I map out the full opportunity and prioritise by commercial value and achievability.
- Local keyword research across your services and area
- Long-tail opportunity mapping (lower competition, higher intent)
- Search volume and difficulty analysis
- Seasonal and trend analysis
- Competitor keyword gap identification
Technical SEO foundations
Most SEO work fails because the foundations are broken. Site speed, crawlability, mobile performance, structured data, internal linking, duplicate content - these are not optional extras. They are the baseline Google expects before it considers ranking you. I fix them before anything else.
- Core Web Vitals optimisation (LCP, CLS, FID)
- XML sitemap and robots.txt
- Schema markup for local businesses, reviews and services
- Internal linking structure
- HTTPS and security review
- Mobile usability testing
On-page optimisation
Every important page on your site needs to be structured so Google understands exactly what it is about and who it is for. Title tags, meta descriptions, heading hierarchy, content depth, calls to action and local signals all need to work together. I optimise each page methodically, not with keyword stuffing, but with content that answers real questions properly.
- Title tag and meta description rewrites for every key page
- Heading structure (H1, H2, H3) optimised for target terms
- Content depth improvements on thin or underperforming pages
- Location signals woven naturally into content
- Calls to action on every page with clear next steps
- Image optimisation and alt text
Google Business Profile and local signals
For local businesses, your Google Business Profile is often more important than your website for initial visibility. A properly optimised GBP, consistent local citations, and active review management can put you in the local pack for searches your competitors are not even aware of. I handle all of this as a core part of every local SEO campaign.
- GBP category selection, description and services
- Photo and post optimisation
- Review management strategy and response templates
- Local citation building across UK directories (Yell, Bing Places, Apple Maps, Thomson Local)
- NAP (name, address, phone) consistency audit
- Local content targeting your specific area
Content strategy and creation
Google rewards sites that are genuinely useful to searchers. That means content that goes deeper than a competitor's page, answers the real questions customers ask, and builds topical authority over time. I develop a content plan around your target keywords and create the content, or brief you to create it, depending on what works best.
- Content gap analysis vs ranking competitors
- Service page depth improvements
- Local landing pages for surrounding areas
- FAQ content targeting featured snippet opportunities
- Blog and guide strategy built around search intent
- Content calendar and publishing schedule
Link building and authority
Google still uses links as a primary trust signal. A site that authoritative, relevant sources point to is treated as more credible than one with no external references. I build links through genuine outreach, local directories, PR mentions and industry listings - no bought links, no spam, nothing that could get your site penalised.
- Local citation building (quantity and quality)
- Industry directory submissions
- Digital PR and local news outreach
- Supplier and partner link opportunities
- Broken link reclamation
- Guest post strategy for relevant industry sites
Monthly reporting and iteration
Every month you get a clear report showing where your rankings stand, how organic traffic is moving, which pages are performing, and what I am working on next. No dashboards full of vanity metrics. Just the numbers that tell you whether the work is generating more enquiries. SEO is iterative - I review what is working and double down on it.
- Rank tracking across target keywords
- Organic traffic and engagement data
- Google Business Profile insights (calls, direction requests, website clicks)
- Conversion tracking (form fills, calls from Google Ads)
- Next month's planned activity
- Honest assessment of what is working and what needs to change
What I need from you to get results.
SEO is not a passive service where you hand over a cheque and wait. The businesses that get the best results from SEO are those that see it as a partnership. Here is what your involvement looks like in practice.
You understand your customers better than any SEO tool does. What words do they use? What questions do they ask? What puts them off? That insight shapes a keyword strategy that works.
I need admin access to WordPress or your CMS to make technical changes, update pages and add content. Without access, I can advise but cannot implement.
If these are not set up, I set them up. If they are, I need view access to understand your current performance baseline.
Your GBP needs to be claimed, verified and handed to me to manage. If it is not claimed, that is the first thing I sort.
For technical sectors, I need your input to write content that is accurate and credible. I research, structure and write, but your expertise makes the content genuinely authoritative.
SEO compounds. The businesses that get the best results are the ones that commit for 12 months, not the ones that bail after 90 days because they have not hit page one yet.
SEO results I have actually delivered.
I do not have vague portfolio screenshots. I have specific, measurable results from real campaigns at enterprise scale and through Harrison Mann client work.
By day I lead digital marketing for a major UK IT solutions and services provider with revenues exceeding £2 billion. I own the SEO strategy, keyword planning, technical optimisation and content programme across their UK and international websites. That is not experience I read about. It is work I do every day.
Through Harrison Mann, I apply the same methodology to local businesses and growing companies, where the same principles produce results that would be unaffordable from a large agency.
Honest answers to the questions most agencies avoid.
I would rather you go into this with accurate expectations than be disappointed 6 months in. These are the real answers to the questions I get asked most often.
For low-competition local searches in smaller towns, meaningful rankings often appear within 2 to 3 months. For competitive terms like "web designer leeds" or "solicitor london", expect 6 to 12 months before hitting page one consistently. I will tell you honestly at the audit stage what is realistic for your specific situation.
Google takes time to crawl, index and evaluate changes. When you improve a page, Google needs to re-crawl it, assess the quality against competitors, and update its index. That process takes weeks, sometimes months. There is no shortcut.
Generally yes, much more so than paid ads. Rankings built on genuine technical quality and relevant content tend to stick. They can be affected by algorithm updates and competitor activity, which is why ongoing work is more effective than a one-off project.
They happen several times a year. Sites built on solid technical foundations and genuinely useful content weather most updates well. Sites built on shortcuts and thin content get hit. I only build the former.
Your rankings will not disappear overnight. The work done stays in place. But active competitors who keep pushing will eventually overtake you. SEO is a continuous process, not a destination.
Yes. Local SEO focuses on appearing in searches from people in a specific geographic area, particularly in the Google Maps local pack. It involves GBP optimisation, local citations and local content alongside standard SEO. National SEO is typically more competitive and slower to produce results.
What SEO has actually delivered.
Not vanity metrics. Specific, measurable outcomes from real campaigns.
GEO and AEO: getting found in AI search, not just Google
Search is no longer only ten blue links. More and more people get their answers from AI: Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and voice assistants. When someone asks 'who is the best [trade] in Bradford' or 'find me a [service] near me', these systems give a single, summarised answer, and if your business is not part of it, you are invisible to a fast-growing share of customers.
Optimising for this is sometimes called GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) or AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation). The terms overlap: both are about being the business that AI systems find, understand and cite when they answer a relevant question.
The encouraging part for local businesses is that the foundations are the same ones strong local SEO already builds:
- Consistent NAP across the web, so AI gets your details right.
- Structured data, so your facts are machine-readable.
- Genuine reviews, which AI summarises when assessing reputation.
- Clear entity signals, so the model understands exactly what your business is and where it operates.
- Content written as clear questions and concise, factual answers, the format AI is most likely to quote.
- An llms.txt file and AI information page, so AI crawlers read your business accurately rather than guessing.
I build all of this into every local campaign in 2026.
Your business, services and expertise need to be clearly defined as entities that AI models can understand and reference accurately.
Schema for your business, services, reviews and FAQs gives AI systems structured facts to pull into AI-generated answers.
Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trustworthiness signals help both Google and AI systems assess whether your content is worth citing.
Content structured with clear questions, concise answers and factual specifics is more likely to be extracted and cited by AI search tools.
A dedicated llms.txt file and AI info page helps AI crawlers understand your business accurately, reducing the risk of being misrepresented in AI-generated answers.
Being mentioned on authoritative, trusted sources is increasingly important for AI visibility, not just traditional Google rankings.

What clients say.
"Searching for website designers gave us a long list to choose from, but we're so glad we found Richard at Harrison Mann. He's been incredibly helpful with digital marketing advice and support, and thanks to him, we've now got a solid plan in place to boost footfall at both of our salons."

"We wanted more control over our website, as we'd been relying on another agency to make updates. Being able to change content ourselves quickly was important, and the custom WordPress website now lets us do just that. The new site has already helped boost our sales."

"After opening our new flooring showroom, I knew we needed a strong online presence. Finding the right website designer in Bradford made all the difference. We now have a great site that shows up locally for the keywords our customers are searching. It's the little percentage improvements that the team have really helped us with, we're already seeing more people coming through the doors."

Clear SEO pricing with no hidden extras.
All SEO work is quoted clearly before I start. No vague retainers where you are not sure what you are paying for. No locked-in 12-month contracts. No fees that balloon unexpectedly.
Most local businesses start with an audit to understand the landscape, then move to a monthly retainer once we have a clear plan. I take on a limited number of SEO clients at a time so every campaign gets proper attention.
The difference between SEO and local SEO
Regular SEO is about ranking your website for searches wherever they happen, often nationally. Local SEO narrows the focus to the people in your area and adds the pieces national SEO does not touch: your Google Business Profile, the map pack, local citations and reviews. If your customers are local, you need both, the organic rankings and the local visibility, working together.
