Content Marketing

Content that ranks on Google and turns readers into customers.

Google rewards websites that provide genuinely useful, in-depth answers to the questions people search for. Most small business sites have nothing to say. I plan and write the content that changes that.

The challenge

Is your website invisible on Google because it has nothing to say?

Google\'s algorithm is designed to surface the most genuinely useful result for any given search. A website with 5 thin pages and no new content looks, to Google, like a business with nothing to say. Your competitors who publish consistently are earning the rankings you should have.

Your website has been the same 5 thin pages for 3 years and Google is ignoring it
You started a blog 2 years ago, wrote 3 posts and never touched it again
Competitors are outranking you for searches you should be winning because they publish consistently
Every piece of content you try to write ends up on a to-do list that never gets done
You have real expertise in your field but no way of demonstrating it online to potential customers
Your service pages sound like every other company in your sector, generic, forgettable and unconvincing

What content marketing actually is, and what it is not

Content marketing is not blogging for the sake of it, and it is not churning out posts to tick a box. It is the deliberate building of topical authority: publishing genuinely useful answers to the questions your customers search for, so that Google, and now AI search, sees you as the business that knows its subject. Done well, it earns rankings, demonstrates expertise, and brings in enquiries from people who found you because you answered their question better than anyone else.

The reason most small business blogs fail is not effort. It is approach. Three posts written two years ago and then abandoned tell Google nothing. A handful of thin, generic articles that say the same thing as everyone else give a search engine no reason to rank you. Content works when it is planned around real search demand, written with genuine expertise, and published consistently enough to compound.

How topic clusters and pillar pages earn rankings

The structure that earns rankings is the topic cluster. A pillar page covers a broad subject in depth, and a set of cluster articles each answer a specific question within that subject, all linked together. To a search engine this signals genuine, organised expertise across a whole topic, not a one-off post, and that topical authority is what lifts a site above competitors who publish in scattered, unconnected bursts.

I plan clusters from your actual Search Console and keyword data: the broad terms worth a pillar, the specific questions worth a cluster article each, and the internal links that tie them together so authority flows through the whole set. It is the difference between writing articles and building a content engine.

Why E-E-A-T and AI search make content quality matter more, not less

It would be easy to assume AI has made written content less valuable. The opposite is true. Google now rewards experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust (E-E-A-T), and both Google's AI Overviews and assistants like ChatGPT increasingly answer questions by citing sources. To be the source that gets cited, content has to do three things: demonstrate real first-hand expertise, carry clear authorship, and answer the question directly and structurally rather than burying the answer.

I write for both audiences at once: content that ranks in traditional search, and content that is clear, well-structured and authoritative enough to be quoted in an AI answer. As more people start their research by asking an AI rather than scrolling results, being the cited source is becoming one of the most valuable positions a small business can hold.

Frequently asked questions about content marketing

How much does content marketing cost?

Programmes start from around £500 per month. The right level depends on how competitive your market is and how quickly you want to build, but consistency over twelve months matters more than volume in any single month.

How long until content marketing works?

Expect meaningful traction over six to twelve months. Content compounds: the library you build keeps earning traffic long after it is published, which is what makes it one of the best-value channels over time, but it is not an overnight one.

How often should I publish?

Consistency beats volume. A steady, planned cadence of genuinely useful pieces will outperform a burst of thin content followed by silence. I plan a calendar you can actually sustain.

Is blogging still worth it now that AI answers questions directly?

More than ever, but only if the content is genuinely expert and well-structured. AI answers are built from sources, and the businesses whose content gets cited are the ones publishing clear, authoritative answers. Thin, generic content was always a waste; now it is simply invisible.

Do you write the content or just plan it?

Both. I research and plan the strategy, then write and optimise the content. You are not handed a spreadsheet and left to do the hard part yourself.

How do you measure content marketing ROI?

Through Search Console and analytics: rankings gained, organic traffic earned, and the enquiries that traffic generates. I report on what the content is actually returning, not vanity metrics.

How it works

How I plan and deliver content marketing.

A clear process from first conversation to completion. No mystery, no surprises.

01

Content audit

I review what you already have, what is ranking, what is not, what competitors are doing better, and where the biggest gaps are. Most businesses have untapped opportunities in content they already have but has never been properly optimised.

02

Keyword and topic research

I identify the search terms your customers use at every stage of the buying journey. Awareness searches ("how to choose a web designer"), consideration searches ("web designer vs agency"), and decision searches ("web designer [location]"). Each becomes content.

03

Content calendar planning

A 3 to 6 month editorial calendar showing what will be written, when it will publish, which keyword it targets, and what the call to action will be. No guesswork, every piece has a clear purpose.

04

Writing and optimisation

I research, write and optimise every piece. You review before anything goes live. The content is genuinely useful to your audience, not keyword-stuffed filler. I write in your tone of voice.

05

Publishing and internal linking

Published and linked correctly within your site so both readers and Google can navigate your content effectively. Internal linking builds topical authority and keeps readers on the site longer.

06

Performance review

Monthly review of which pieces are ranking, driving traffic and generating enquiries. Strategy updated based on what is working. Content that is close to ranking gets optimised further.

It's the little percentage improvements that the team have really helped us with, we're already seeing more people coming through the doors."

Honest answers about content marketing.

Content marketing is a long-term strategy. Here is what you need to understand before committing.

How long before results?

New content can start ranking within weeks for low-competition terms. For competitive queries, expect 3 to 9 months before meaningful organic traffic arrives. Content marketing compounds, the library you build over 12 months earns traffic consistently, unlike ads that stop when you stop paying.

Do you write for any industry?

Yes. I research every topic thoroughly. Technical or specialist content benefits from collaboration, you supply the expert knowledge, I supply the SEO structure and writing craft. The result is content that ranks AND demonstrates genuine expertise.

Is content marketing worth it for a small business?

Businesses with consistent content strategies generate three times more leads than those without. The catch is consistency. A single brilliant article does little. A library of well-planned, well-written content built over 12 months changes your Google visibility permanently.

What about social media content?

I focus on search-driven content, articles, guides and service pages, because the return on effort is demonstrably higher for most small businesses. I can supply social-ready adaptations of content I write, but I do not manage social channels.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions.

A blog post is written for your existing audience. A content marketing strategy creates content designed to rank for specific search queries and attract new visitors who have never heard of you. Every piece I write has a keyword target, a search intent, and a conversion goal. Most business blogs lack all three.
Length is determined by the search intent and the competition. For most competitive queries, 1,500 to 3,000 words is the right range. For some informational queries, 800 words is sufficient. I write what is genuinely needed to rank and satisfy the reader, not to hit an arbitrary word count.
Yes. Service page copywriting is often more valuable than blog content because it directly targets commercial intent searches. A well-written service page ranks for "web designer Yorkshire" and converts visitors who are ready to buy. I offer page rewrites as a standalone service or as part of a retainer.
Yes, always. Every piece goes to you for review before publishing. I welcome your feedback and input, particularly on technical or specialist topics where your expertise makes the content more accurate and authoritative.
Yes. Monthly reports covering which articles are ranking, what positions they are in, how much organic traffic they are generating and which pieces are driving enquiries. I track this in Google Search Console and Analytics.
Yes. Content updates are often higher value than new content, an existing article that is close to page one can often be pushed there with an update and expansion. I include a content audit at the start of every engagement to identify these opportunities.
